A trio of Richmond high school basketball teams tip off their 2021-22 seasons this week in Langley.

The Steveston-London Sharks will be first to get out on the hardwood, when they face the Fleetwood Park Dragons in senior boys’ exhibition play today at 4 p.m. at the Langley Events Centre.

The McMath Wildcats and MacNeill Ravens, meanwhile, will have to wait until Thursday to get their first taste of action. The ‘Cats are scheduled to face the King George Dragons at 3 p.m. tomorrow (Dec. 9), with an additional game between the Ravens and Walnut Grove also slated to tip-off simultaneously.

All told, eight of the top 10 ranked teams from the province’s 2A, 3A and 4A rankings, as well as another five listed as honourable mentions to start this season, are part of the 20-team lineup.

Play wraps up Saturday, with the championship game at 8:30 p.m.

Celebrating its 10th anniversary, the Tsumura Basketball Invitational pays homage to one of the greatest basketball writers ever in Howard Tsumura.

Tsumura runs Varsity Letters, the pre-eminent website devoted to high school and university sports in B.C.

“I feel so fortunate to be included as part of something which at the launch of every season, gets to serve as the start of a full-circle journey that both begins and ends right here at Langley Events Centre (which is) also of course the site of the B.C. championships every March,” said the ever-humble Tsumura.

“There is nothing that has made me prouder than to have my name attached to both this week’s boys’ and next week’s girls’ 20-team tournaments,” he said.

Free to attend, spectators must show proof of double vaccination as well as wear masks when inside the facility. All games will also be streamed for free at tfsetv.ca.

The girls’ tournament goes next week (Dec. 15 to 18) and will feature among others the McMath senior girls’ basketball team.
